Abstract :
School librarians and academic librarians share a commitment to information literacy instruction but to a large extent, in the United States and Canada, they have approached their work from different theoretical foundations and with different practical strategies. Some of these differences have arisen through differences in their professional education. This article compares the approaches to information literacy instruction commonly used in school libraries and academic libraries over the past 50 years. Despite differences in their education and working environments, some convergences in school library and academic library instructional practices are appearing, demonstrated through a number of shared guiding principles of pedagogy.
